The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 an orphaned relative 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
