The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
