Light (Al-Noor)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ This is a chapter which We have sent down and decreed its commands, and in which We have sent down clear verses, in order that you may ponder. 1 The woman and the man guilty of illegal sexual intercourse, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. Let not pity withhold you in their case, in a punishment prescribed by Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of the believers witness their punishment. (This punishment is for unmarried persons guilty of the above crime but if married persons commit it, the punishment is to stone them to death, according to Allah's Law). 2 The adulterer shall marry only an adulteress or a polytheist woman, and an adulteress shall marry only an adulterer or a polytheist man; such marriages are forbidden for believers. 3 And as for those who accuse chaste women [of adultery,] and then are unable to produce four witnesses [in support of their accusation,] flog them with eighty stripes and ever after refuse to accept from them any testimony - since it is they, they that are truly depraved! 4 Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. 5 And those who accuse their wives and do not have witnesses except their own statements – for such the testimony is that he bear the testimony four times by the name of Allah that he is truthful. 6 They should say on the fifth time, "Let God's curse be upon me if I am a liar". 7 The woman's punishment can be averted if she swears four times by God as testimony that her husband is a liar, 8 On the fifth time she should say, "Let the curse of God be upon me if what he says is true." 9 If it were not for the bounty of Allah to you and His Mercy, and that Allah turns, and is the Wise, 10
