[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 When their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 124 I am for you an honest Messenger. 125 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 126 And I ask of you no hire therefor: my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 127 "Do you build useless monuments on every mountain 128 “And prefer strong palaces, that perhaps you may live for ever?” 129 And will you [always,] whenever you lay hand [on others,] lay hand [on them] cruelly, without any restraint? 130 Rather keep your duty to Allah, and obey me. 131 “Fear Him Who has aided you with the things you know.” 132 succoured you with flocks and sons, 133 And gardens and springs. 134 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day." 135 They said, “It is the same for us, whether you advise us or not be of the preachers.” 136 This is but a custom of the ancients. 137 and we shall never be punished' 138 In this there is evidence (of the Truth), yet most of them do not have any faith. 139 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 140
