A multitude of those of old 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
