The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Indeed your efforts differ. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
