Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Kaf-Ha-Ya-A’in-Sad. (* Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah and to whomever He reveals know their precise meanings.) 1 Mention of the mercy of thy Lord to His bondman Zakariyya. 2 When he called upon his Lord in a low voice, 3 he prayed: "O my Sustainer! Feeble have become my bones, and my head glistens with grey hair. But never yet, O my Lord, has my prayer unto Thee remained unanswered. 4 Lo! I fear my kinsfolk after me, since my wife is barren. Oh, give me from Thy presence a successor 5 Who shall inherit of me and inherit (also) of the house of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, acceptable (unto Thee). 6 (It was said unto him): O Zachariah! Lo! We bring thee tidings of a son whose name is John; We have given the same name to none before (him). 7 "My Lord!" [said Zachariah], "How shall I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached such extreme old age?" 8 He answered: "So shall it be." Your Lord says: "It is easy for Me," and then added: "For beyond doubt, I created you earlier when you were nothing." 9 Zachariah asked, " Lord, show me evidence (if this is a heavenly news)." The Lord said, "The evidence for it is that you must not speak (to any mortal) though you are in good health for three nights (and days)." 10 So Zakariya came out to his people from him chamber: He told them by signs to celebrate Allah's praises in the morning and in the evening. 11 O Yahya! take hold of the Book with strength, and We granted him wisdom while yet a child 12 and a tenderness from Us, and purity; and he was godfearing, 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not insolent, disobedient. 14 And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive. 15
