Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
