Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
