The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the sun and its morning brightness, 1 By the Moon as she follows him; 2 by the day, when it displays it, 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 and by the sky and by Him Who made it; 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 And by oath of the soul and by oath of Him Who made it proper. 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 He who purifies it will indeed be successful, 9 And he who confines it will surely come to grief. 10 The people of Thamud rejected (the truth) as a result of their rebelliousness 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
