The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 But save him who fears 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
