The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 and purify your robes, 4 And all defilement shun! 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then looked he, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
