۞ "Bring ye up", it shall be said, "The wrong-doers and their wives, and the things they worshipped- 22 apart from God, and guide them unto the path of Hell! 23 "But stop them, verily they are to be questioned. 24 "How is it that [now] you cannot succour one another?" 25 Nay! on that day they shall be submissive. 26 but [since it will be too late,] they will turn upon one another, demanding of each other [to relieve them of the burden of their past sins]. 27 (The followers will say to their leaders): “You used to come to us from the right hand.” 28 They shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers; 29 And we had no authority over you, but you were an inordinate people; 30 “So the Word of our Lord has proved true upon us; we will surely have to taste (the punishment).” 31 And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators." 32 So they shall on that day be sharers in the chastisement one with another. 33 Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals. 34 For when it was said to them: 'There is no god except Allah' they were always proud 35 and said: 'Are we to renounce our gods for the sake of a mad poet' 36 (They say so although) he brought the Truth and confirmed the veracity of the Messengers. 37 Verily, you (pagans of Makkah) are going to taste the painful torment; 38 but you shall not be recompensed except for what you were doing. 39 But Allah's chosen servants (shall be spared this woeful end). 40 will have their determined sustenance 41 fruits -- and they high-honoured 42 in gardens of bliss, 43 They will be seated upon couches set face to face; 44 A bowl shall be made to go round them from water running out of springs, 45 Clear, delicious to drink, 46 causing no headiness or intoxication. 47 And with them shall be those who restrain the eyes, having beautiful eyes; 48 As if they were eggs carefully protected. 49 Then they will turn to one another and question one another. 50 One of them will say, "I had a companion who asked me, 51 "Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)? 52 What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be certainly brought to judgment? 53 And he will reply: 'Are you looking down (into Hell)' 54 So he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire. 55 He will say to him: -- By Allah, you almost ruined me. 56 "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)! 57 What, do we then not die 58 except for our first death? Are we not going to be punished? 59 Verily this! that is the supreme achievement. 60 For the like of this, then, let the workers work. 61 So is this welcome better, or the tree of Zaqqum? 62 We have made this tree a trial for the wrong-doers. 63 Surely it is a tree that-grows in the bottom of the hell; 64 Its spathes are like the heads of satans. 65 And lo! they verily must eat thereof, and fill (their) bellies therewith. 66 Then most surely they shall have after it to drink of a mixture prepared in boiling water. 67 Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire. 68 They indeed found their fathers astray, 69 Yet they hasten to follow in their footsteps. 70 And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples, 71 And We had already sent among them warners. 72 Then look how was the end of those who were warned - 73 Save single-minded slaves of Allah. 74
