a large group of the earlier people 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
