A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
