A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
