The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 thy robes purify 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 Then he looked around, 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
