The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 arise and warn, 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And your garments purify! 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 it will be a hard day 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 May he be condemned! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he looked, 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
