The Human (Al-Insan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
HAS THERE [not] been an endless span of time before man [appeared - a time] when he was not yet a thing to be thought of? 1 Lo! We create man from a drop of thickened fluid to test him; so We make him hearing, knowing. 2 Surely We have shown him the way: he may be thankful or unthankful. 3 [Now,] behold, for those who deny the truth, We have prepared chains, iron collars and a blazing fire, but 4 [whereas,] behold, the truly virtuous shall drink from a cup flavoured with the calyx of sweet-smelling flowers: 5 A spring of which the [righteous] servants of Allah will drink; they will make it gush forth in force [and abundance]. 6 (Because) they perform the vow and fear a day whereof the evil is wide-spreading, 7 who give food, for the love of Him to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, 8 We only feed you for Allah's sake; we desire from you neither reward nor thanks: 9 Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful." 10 So Allah saved them from the evil of that day, and gave them freshness and joy. 11 And will reward them for what they patiently endured [with] a garden [in Paradise] and silk [garments]. 12 There they will recline on elevated couches and will be subjected neither to the burning heat of the sun nor to bitter cold. 13 And the shade thereof is close upon them, and the bunches of fruit thereof will hang low within their reach. 14 Vessels of silver and goblets of pure crystal will be passed round among them 15 Also there will be crystal clear goblets of silver containing the exact measure of drink which they desire. 16 And they shall be made to drink therein a cup the admixture of which shall be ginger, 17 therein a fountain whose name is called Salsabil. 18 ۞ Immortal youths shall surround them, waiting upon them; when you see them, you would think they are scattered pearls. 19 And when thou lookest, it is there thou wilt see a Bliss and a Realm Magnificent. 20 They [i.e., the virtuous] shall be attired in garments of fine green silk and rich brocade and will be adorned with bracelets of silver. Their Lord will give them a pure wine to drink. 21 [And it will be said], "Indeed, this is for you a reward, and your effort has been appreciated." 22
