Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn; 1 and ten nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 Enter then My garden." 30
