Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 and the ten nights! 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 enter My Paradise! 30
