The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 And by oath of the day when it reveals it 3 and by the night when it enshrouds him! 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 by the soul and Who shaped it 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 He who purifies it will prosper, 9 and he who corrupts it is sure to fail. 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
