We created mankind from clay, molded from mud, 26 And created the jinn before him, from smokeless fire. 27 And recall when your Lord said to the angels, “I will create man from sounding clay made out of black smelly mud.” 28 And when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, bow before him in homage;" 29 The angels bowed in homage in a body 30 Except Iblis (Satan), - he refused to be among the prostrators. 31 The Lord inquired: "Iblis! What is the matter with you that you did not join those who prostrated?" 32 [Iblis (Satan)] said: "I am not the one to prostrate myself to a human being, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud." 33 (Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajim (an outcast or a cursed one)." [Tafsir At-Tabari] 34 "And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)." 35 Iblis prayed, "Lord, grant me respite until the Day of Judgment". 36 "You are among the reprieved," (said the Lord), 37 Until the Day of the time well-known." 38 (Iblis) said: "O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong,- 39 except for Your chosen servants." 40 (To which God) said: "This way is right by Me. 41 "Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghawin (Mushrikun and those who go astray, criminals, polytheists, and evil-doers, etc.). 42 Gehenna (Hell) will be the promise for all of them. 43 There are seven gates in it, and to each gate a portion of them has been allotted. 44
