The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
