a large group of the earlier people 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
