Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and the ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And ye love wealth with inordinate love! 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Enter among My servants 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
