The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Ra. These are the verses of the Book and the glorious Quran. 1 Perchance the unbelievers will wish that they had surrendered: 2 (Muhammad), leave them alone to eat and enjoy themselves and let their desires deceive them; they will soon know (the Truth). 3 Whenever We destroyed a town, a definite term had previously been decreed for it. 4 No group may advance its appointed promise nor postpone it. 5 And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad. 6 Why bringest thou not angels unto us if thou art of the truthtellers! 7 [Yet] We never send down angels otherwise than in accordance with the [demands of] truth; and [were the angels to appear now,] lo! they [who reject this divine writ] would have no further respite! 8 Behold, it is We Ourselves who have bestowed from on high, step by step, this reminder; and behold, it is We who shall truly guard it [from all corruption]. 9 And assuredly We have sent apostles before thee among the sects of the ancients. 10 But never once an apostle came to them at whom they did not scoff. 11 Even so we make a way for it in the hearts of the culprits. 12 They do not believe in him, and the tradition of earlier nations has passed. 13 and even if We opened to them a door from heaven, and they began ascending through it, 14 They would say: Our sight is wrong - nay, but we are folk bewitched. 15
