Nay, by the moon, 32 And by the night when it withdraws, 33 And by the dawn when it brightens, 34 Surely, it is one of the gravest things, 35 A warning to mankind,- 36 Whoever of you desires to progress or lag behind. 37 Every soul is held in pledge against its own deeds, 38 Except those of the right hand 39 In gardens they will ask one another 40 Of evil-doers: 41 What hath brought you to this burning? 42 They will answer: We were not of those who prayed 43 and neither did we feed the needy; 44 And we have been wading with the waders. 45 and we denied the Day of Judgement 46 Till death overtook us. 47 So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors. 48 What ails them, that they turn away from the Reminder, 49 as though they were terrified asses 50 That had fled from a lion? 51 Nay; every one of them desires that he may be given pages spread out; 52 By no means. In fact they do not fear the Hereafter. 53 but this is truly a reminder. 54 So whoever wills may heed advice from it. 55 But they will not remember except as God wills: He is worthy to be feared, and He is worthy of forgiving 56
