And they ask thee of Zul Qarnain. Say thou: I shall recite unto you of him some mention. 83 Indeed We gave him authority in the land and bestowed him the means of everything. 84 and so he chose the right means [in whatever he did]. 85 [And he marched westwards] till, when he came to the setting of the sun, it appeared to him that it was setting in a dark, turbid sea; and nearby he found a people [given to every kind of wrongdoing]. We said: "O thou Two-Horned One! Thou mayest either cause [them] to suffer or treat them with kindness!" 86 He submitted, “Regarding one who has done injustice, we shall soon punish him – he will then be brought back to his Lord, Who will punish him severely.” 87 But as for him who believeth and doeth right, good will be his reward, and We shall speak unto him a mild command. 88 Then followed he (another) way, 89 Until, when he came to the rising place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We (Allah) had provided no shelter against the sun. 90 (He left them) as they were: We completely understood what was before him. 91 He travelled 92 Until when he arrived between the two mountains, he found beside them a people who well-nigh understood not a word. 93 They said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn! Lo! Gog and Magog are spoiling the land. So may we pay thee tribute on condition that thou set a barrier between us and them? 94 He replied, "The power that my Lord has granted me is better (than your tax). Help me with your man-power and I shall construct a barrier between you and Gog and Magog. 95 Bring me ingots of iron!" Then, after he had [piled up the iron and] filled the gap between the two mountain-sides, he said: "[Light a fire and] ply your bellows!" At length, when he had made it [glow like] fire, he commanded: "Bring me molten copper which I may pour upon it." 96 So Gog and Magog were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration. 97 Dhu al-Qarnayn said: "This is a mercy from my Lord: but when the time of my Lord's promise shall come, He will level the rampart with the ground. My Lord's promise always comes true." 98 ۞ And We shall leave them on that day surging one against other and the trumpet shall be blown, and then We shall assemble them together. 99 We will fully expose the view of hell on that Day to the disbelievers, 100 whose eyes had been veiled against Our Quran and who were not able to hear (its recitation). 101
