The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
