Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
