۞ The Inevitable Reality - 1 And what is that indubitable event? 2 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the reality is! 3 THE LIE gave [the tribes of] Thamud and 'Ad to [all tidings of] that sudden calamity! 4 So destroyed were the Thamud by a storm of thunder and lightning; 5 The Ads were destroyed by a swift, destructive gale 6 which continued to strike them for seven nights and eight days so that eventually you could see the people lying dead like the hollow trunks of uprooted palm-trees. 7 Can you see any of their survivors? 8 And Pharaoh, and those before him, and the Cities Overthrown, committed habitual Sin. 9 And disobeyed (each) the messenger of their Lord; so He punished them with an abundant Penalty. 10 And when the waters rose (high) We carried you in the sailing (Ark), 11 as a lesson for you, but only attentive ears will retain it. 12 When a single blow is blown on the Horn, 13 And the earth with the mountains shall be lifted up and crushed with one crash, 14 So that is the day when the forthcoming event will occur. 15 And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm. 16 And the angels will be on its sides, and eight angels will, that Day, bear the Throne of your Lord above them. 17 The Day whereon ye shall be mustered nothing hidden by you shall be hidden. 18 So whoever is given his book in his right hand – he will say, “Take, read my account!” 19 I was certain I'll be given my account." 20 Then he shall be in a life well-pleasing 21 In a lofty Paradise, 22 The fruits in bunches whereof will be low and near at hand. 23 [And all who are thus blest will be told:] "Eat and drink with good cheer in return for all [the good deeds] that you have sent ahead in days gone by!" 24 But as for him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say: Oh, would that I had not been given my book 25 and that we would never knew what our records contained. 26 How I wish my death had ended all. 27 Of no use was even my wealth. 28 my authority is gone from me.' 29 [Allah will say], "Seize him and shackle him. 30 and then let him enter hell, 31 and then thrust him into a chain [of other sinners like him - a chain] the length whereof is seventy cubits: 32 Behold, he never believed in God the All-mighty, 33 And urged not on the feeding of the wretched. 34 Therefor hath he no lover here this day, 35 Nor any food save filthy corruption. 36 “Which none except the guilty shall eat.” 37
