The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
