The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous - 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Teacheth man that which he knew not. 5 Indeed, surely the human is very insolent 6 because he thinks himself self-sufficient: 7 Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning. 8 Have you seen one who prevents 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Have you considered if he were on the right way, 11 or orders piety? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 A lying, sinful forehead. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
