The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 And We see it nigh. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 save those that pray 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
