a large group of the earlier people 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say (O Muhammad SAW): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times. 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
