Certainly Aaron had said to them even before (the return of Moses): "My people, you were fallen into error because of the calf. Surely your Lord is Most Compassionate; so follow me and obey my command." 90 'We will not cease,' they said, 'to cleave to it, until Moses returns to us.') 91 Moses said to Aaron, "What prevented you, when you saw that they had gone astray, 92 That thou followedst me not! Hast thou disobeyed my command? 93 Aaron answered: "Son of my mother! Do not seize me with my beard, nor by (the hair of) my head. I feared that on returning you might say: 'You sowed discord among the Children of Israel, and did not pay heed to my words.'" 94 Moses asked, "Samiri, what were your motives?" 95 He answered: "I saw what the people did not see. So I took a handful of dust from the trail of the Messenger, and I flung it (into the fire). Thus did my mind prompt me." 96 (Moses) said: "Get thee gone! but thy (punishment) in this life will be that thou wilt say, 'touch me not'; and moreover (for a future penalty) thou hast a promise that will not fail: Now look at thy god, of whom thou hast become a devoted worshipper: We will certainly (melt) it in a blazing fire and scatter it broadcast in the sea!" 97 Your God is only the One God; there is no god, but He alone who in His knowledge embraces everything.' 98 Thus, [O Muhammad], We relate to you from the news of what has preceded. And We have certainly given you from Us the Qur'an. 99 If any do turn away therefrom, verily they will bear a burden on the Day of judgment; 100 They will abide in this (state): and grievous will the burden be to them on that Day,- 101 The day when the Trumpet is blown. On that day we assemble the guilty white-eyed (with terror), 102 and they shall murmur among themselves: 'You have stayed away but ten (days and nights)' 103 We know best what they will say. The most perceptive of them will say, "You stayed only one day." 104
