The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
