The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the sun and its brightness 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 and by the day as it reveals its glory 3 By the night when it envelopeth it, 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 by the soul and Who shaped it 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 Then the apostle of Allah said unto them: beware of the she-camel of Allah and her drink. 13 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
