Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
