The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the declining star, 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 and taught to him 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
