A throng of the ancients 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
