A numerous company from among the first, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
