The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
