The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah) 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to the Truth) and turns away (from it)? 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 Indeed, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock, 15 A forelock, lying, sinning. 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We too would summon the braves of the army. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
True are the words of God the Almighty.
