Then the two went forth until, when they embarked on the boat, he made a hole in it, whereupon Moses exclaimed: "Have you made a hole in it so as to drown the people in the boat? You have certainly done an awful thing." 71 He said: Did I not tell thee that thou couldst not bear with me? 72 Said [Moses]: "Take-me not to task for my having forgotten [myself,] and be not hard on me on account of what I have done!" 73 They continued on their journey until they met a young boy whom he killed. Moses said, "How could you murder an innocent soul? This is certainly a horrible act". 74 ۞ (Khidr) said: "Did I not tell you that you can have no patience with me?" 75 [Musa (Moses)] said: "If I ask you anything after this, keep me not in your company, you have received an excuse from me." 76 So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so al-Khidhr restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment." 77 He answered, "This is where you and I must part company. But first I will tell you the meaning of the things you could not bear with patiently. 78 “In respect of the boat – it belonged to the poor people who worked on the river, so I wished to flaw it – and behind them was a king who would capture every sound ship.” 79 "The young boy had very faithful parents. We were afraid that out of love for him they would lose their faith in God and commit rebellion 80 It was our wish that their Lord should grant them another in exchange, another better in purity and tenderness. 81 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them, and their father had been righteous, and thy Lord intended that they should come to their full strength and should bring forth their treasure as a mercy from their Lord; and I did it not upon my own command. Such is the interpretation of that wherewith thou couldst not bear. 82
