Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
