Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the clear Book, 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
