The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhamad), the cloaked, 1 Arise and warn 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And sons present by his side. 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
