Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HaMeem 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
